How these amounts are worked out
Amounts come from the ATO's Schedule 1 statement of formulas (NAT 1006 table equivalent) for payments made from 1 July 2026, rounded to the nearest dollar, and match the ATO's published sample data. They don't include study loan repayments, tax offsets claimed on a withholding declaration, or Medicare levy variations. For earnings above $3,400 a week the ATO's printed table can differ from the formula by a dollar, and both are accepted. Payroll software should use the ATO's own publications.
Questions about this tax table
How much tax is withheld from $2,000 a fortnight?
$276 if you claim the tax-free threshold from this employer, or $498 if you don't, before any HELP repayment, tax offset or Medicare levy adjustment.
Which column applies to me?
Use the tax-free threshold column for your main job when you ticked yes to claiming the tax-free threshold on your tax file number declaration. Use the no tax-free threshold column for a second job. Foreign residents use the foreign resident column.
Is HELP or HECS included?
No. If you have a study loan, your employer withholds an extra amount for it on top of these figures. The pay calculator shows your HELP repayment for the year.
Why can my tax withheld differ from my tax for the year?
Withholding is worked out for each pay as if you earn the same amount all year. Your actual tax depends on your total income, deductions and offsets, so you may get a refund or owe a little when you lodge your return.
