Questions about annual leave

How much annual leave do I get in Australia?

Full-time and part-time employees get 4 weeks of paid annual leave a year, based on their ordinary hours. A full-time employee working 38 hours a week builds up 152 hours a year. Casual employees don't get paid annual leave.

How does annual leave build up?

Gradually, from your first day of work, including during probation. Unused leave rolls over from year to year. A part-time employee working 20 hours a week builds up 80 hours a year.

Who gets 5 weeks of annual leave?

Shiftworkers get an extra week when their award or enterprise agreement includes shiftwork provisions and defines them as shiftworkers for this purpose.

What is annual leave loading?

An extra payment, commonly 17.5% of base pay, that some awards and agreements pay when you take annual leave. It isn't part of the National Employment Standards, so check your award or agreement.

Sources and limits

Based on the National Employment Standards in the Fair Work Act 2009 (sections 86 and 87) and the Fair Work Ombudsman's annual leave guidance. Leave is valued at your base pay rate, which excludes overtime and most allowances. Your award or agreement may give more. To see your pay after tax, use the pay calculator.
