Australian CGT starts with the difference between what you received for the asset and its cost base. In this tool, the cost base is estimated from the purchase price plus purchase and sale costs. If the result is a capital gain, carried-forward capital losses are applied before any CGT discount.
- Capital losses reduce capital gains before the discount is applied.
- The 50% discount is only applied when the date inputs show at least a 12-month holding period and the discount toggle is on.
- The net capital gain is added to your other taxable income to estimate the increase in annual tax.
- The result is an estimate for Australian resident individuals and should be checked against your own tax situation.
